When a player is first to act they must put in an initial amount of money into the pot before they see their cards. These are called forced bets and come in the form of antes, blinds, or bring-ins. Regardless of the variant of poker you are playing, this is one of the most important things to understand because it helps create a pot and encourages competition.
After the forced bets are made, a series of betting rounds begins. Players are dealt cards in turn, beginning with the player on the left of the dealer. If you are in a position to raise a bet after the first round, you can say “raise” or “call.” Saying call means you will match the amount of money the person before you raised and place your chips or cash into the pot. If you are not comfortable raising, you can say “fold” and forfeit your hand.
In Pot Limit poker, there is an additional rule that states that a player cannot go all-in on the first round unless their stack is equal to or below the size of the pot. This is an excellent way to prevent people from getting too greedy and going broke early on in the hand.
There are a variety of hands that can win a poker game, but the best ones tend to be high pair, three of a kind, or straight. Flush and two pair are the next strongest hands. Straights are the most common and can be won by any combination of four consecutive cards. If more than one hand has a high pair, the highest card breaks the tie.
You must also be aware of the strength of your opponent’s hands when making moves. Even though your own are strong, if someone else has a good one you may not want to call their bets. You can use this to your advantage by looking at the other players and making guesses about what they have. If you can figure out what they have and how much they might raise it to, you can make more profitable calls and bluffs. This is another area where experience can help you immensely. Over time, you’ll be able to read your opponents and know what they are likely to do with their hands when you raise.
